[0:11:05] Expanding Minds Interview: [Spiritual Wellness] David Hulse has journeyed from a fundamentalist Christian upbringing to an inclusive spiritual vista that champions love over fear. He challenges conventional religious dogmas and offers a message of unconditional love and inclusivity. He is on a path to enlightenment or awakening. He doesn’t think of God as an anthropomorphic old man in the sky. He sees the God as his own potential and he’s looking for it as a presence within himself and within our humanity. He believes that an environment of love is needed for an awakening to happen. Not love in the emotional sense, but the state of consciousness that makes us all one. The word “spirit” means motivation or breath – it moves us. We appreciate and look forward to advancements in technology and many other things, but religions get stuck in their own dogma. This prevents growth and movement. If he’s constantly judging himself morally, asking whether he did this right or wrong, or whether he’s good enough, then he can’t grow in that atmosphere. He focuses on spirituality (not religion). If he accepts unconditional love, then he can have sacred space within himself to grow, mature, research and study.

[0:30:56] Flipside of the Coin: Sheila found a fun article with lots of ideas for different types of dates for couples

Quotes and Take-Aways:

David – I’ve been on a path of discovery for decades and I’m still discovering. There’s no end to it.

David – I didn’t understand this idea of a God they said was love, but at the same time he could kill his own son. There are many places in the bible where it talks about killing people or calls for war or things like that. I realized there was something different from what was being taught outside and what I felt inside. I decided to follow what I felt inside. I found a path that eventually led me out of religion and the denomination I was raised in.

David – I decided to get on a path towards what we call enlightenment or awakenment.

David – I came to the belief that God is a non-definable consciousness interacting with itself. That’s my personal definition. This anthropomorphic old man in the sky that looks like us just dissolved and I realized that the God I was looking for was the presence within myself.

David – The real revelation to me was an experience where I discovered that God is my own potential. It’s my unconscious part of myself. What I try to do is awaken that potential – of the presence of our divinity, if you want to call it that, within our humanity. We’ll never to that until we have the environment of love. Love is the atmosphere for awakening to happen.

David – I’m not talking about the emotional loves. As human beings we love on different levels. I’m talking about the state of a consciousness that makes us all one.

David – The word “spirit” means motivation or breath – that moves us. We wait every year for the next new thing, whether new car or new fashion, but not religion. Religion is the only thing that got stuck in its own dogma that doesn’t teach people growth and movement and that bothered me.

David – If I’m constantly judging myself morally, asking whether I did this right or wrong, or whether I’m good enough, then I can’t grow in that atmosphere. If I accept unconditional love, then I can have the sacred space within myself to grow, to mature, to research and to study. I think that’s what’s missing in many religions – that place to grow and study, which is why I want to have an academy so we can find people on their path and help them move on to their state of awakenment.

David – During the first five years or six of your life you form the early fundamental assumptions about life and about yourself that you get modelled from your tribe, family, society or culture. The become your root assumptions.
