Quotes and Take-Aways:

Dr. Wilson - The Mentor Magazine. It bridges the theory to practice gap, by providing athletes, coaches, parents and support systems with mental performance insights. It covers everything from confidence and resilience to mental skills around self-talk, imagery, stress management and emotional management.

Dr. Wilson – It will be for the athlete or performer within us all. It will also be for coaches of minor sports, competitive sports, athletics, amateur sports who don’t have the time or resources to engage in mental performance as deeply as they want.

Dr. Wilson – Coaches and parents and supporters can create a positive environment and an aspect of psychological safety, where performers/ athletes can make mistakes without being ridiculed. They can foster a positive learning environment in that sense. Other ways are to help athletes learn about imagery and visualization, to show how they can reframe their self-talk to boost their confidence or manage their emotions or show how to create more self-awareness. There are many ways they can help influence and have a good impact.

Dr. Wilson – Resilience to me is having that growth mindset. It’s also about understanding no matter how careful we are or how good we intend to be, we are human beings and we’re naturally going to make mistakes in the pursuit of excellence. Resilience is a perspective of being able to take anything that’s coming at me; while understanding I am going to make some mistakes, but I’m building the skills and resources to be able to accept the obstacles and frustrations. I can grow in the same instance. I can be grateful for some of those obstacles, as well.

Dr. Wilson – Resilience is an understanding that it’s supposed to be tough and that’s okay. I’m supposed to grow, and I’m supposed to struggle a little bit
