What’s On Your Mind: [0:00:44] As part of our Sammy travel series, John asks about her experiences with elephants in Thailand. She made a connection that will last a lifetime. She did volunteer work to help elephants that came to harm, by poaching, or used for entertainment, or worse to tear down their rain forest home. The goal is to rehabilitate and bring peace to the elephants.
[0:10:16] Expanding Minds Interview: [Physical Wellness] We welcome back personal trainer and fitness coach Hillary Fitzgerald. She talks about different ways people can get into fitness. It helps to figure out an activity you really enjoy doing. Hillary tells us why she loves early morning workouts. She loves the feeling of accomplishing something before the day begins. She and her husband take a different approach, because Hillary’s ready to go as soon as she wakes up, but he builds in more warmup at the start of the workouts. While Hillary enjoys early workouts, her message is to do whatever works for you. She says “just move your body” at whatever time of day works best for you.
[0:27:08 ] Adventures of the Starving Artist: It’s a time of year where Cameron has an instinct to slow down, even though many of us are ramping up after summer. Meanwhile he’s amassing a number of pieces of original artwork.
[0:30:25] Move That Body: Khiam Nong returns, this time to tell us about a combination of bone broth and pineapple and rind tea that’s making her feel much better with her gut health. Combined with Pilates and other workouts, she’s feeling amazing.
Khiam buys bone brother from Beck’s Broth, whose Instagram address is @becksbroth She’s at St. Jacob’s Market and the Kitchener farmers’ market.
[0:35:31] Running Popup: John was uplifted while tired during a long training run. He was thinking of slowing down and wishing he had better technique. Then some kids came flying onto the path, laughing while running free and enjoying the moment. It gave him a boost.
[0:36:53] Flipside of the Coin: Sheila and John wonder why some people dislike people who have it together, or get lucky, or have stuff that they don’t have? Why are we resentful of other people’s success?
Quotes and Take-Aways:
Sammy – I’ve always loved elephants, ever since I was a little girl – their faces and their smiles. You just know that they are wise creatures. They know so much about the earth. They’re honestly so intelligent.
John – It broke my heart to hear Sammy tell Sheila in an earlier show that some people use elephants and force them to tear down the rainforest – the very home they live in. It’s horrifying.
Hillary – Look to yourself and ask, “What do I really enjoy doing”, because you’re going to do it more if you really enjoy doing it.
Hillary – I wake up and I’m ready to go. I love the feeling of accomplishing something before the day starts. I begin the day with a success. The rest of the day just falls into place.
Hillary – For me it’s great getting it done early in the day. If I don’t, I feel it would sit on my mind, knowing I need to do it later.
Hillary – For me it works better getting it done early. Whatever works for you, I say just move your body. Whatever time you can do it is great. Some people have more energy at night and that’s just the way they are.
Hillary – I’ve been doing early morning workouts for so long and there are so many benefits. I feel like I’ve done a really hard thing. Everything else is smooth sailing after that.
Bulletin Board Quote brought to you by John: Keep it to yourself Hillary.
