[0:09:55] Expanding Minds Interview: [Physical Wellness] We interview regular guest Hillary Fitzgerald about how setting goals motivates us with Physical Wellness and other things. She likes to set mini-goals that work towards a larger goal. Goals don’t need to be grandiose. Often it’s good to set small goals, achieve those, prove to yourself that you can achieve them, get that feeling of success, then set your next goal and succeed there. New success builds off an earlier ones. You start to really believe in yourself. Goals keep us disciplined and on track. Achieving harder goals has additional benefits. If she’s in a tough situation, she can tell herself, “look what you can do. You’ve done tough exercise. You can push through anything. You can also do this”, no matter the circumstances.

[0:36:35] Flipside of the Coin: We reminisce about old-school photo booths. They were so much fun.
Quotes and Take-Aways:
Hillary – Most people come to me with a goal in mind. They want to start working out for various reasons. It could be feeling better about themselves overall. It could be a weight loss goal. Perhaps they want to run a 5K and get stronger for that. There are many goals. No matter what your goal is, I believe there is a benefit to setting a goal. It is motivating when you set a goal. It keeps you on track.
Hillary – I like to set mini-goals to later hit my larger goals. That’s a great way to get to the end goal.
Hillary – Setting a goal helps you be discipline and motivates you to help you see the end picture.
Hillary – It’s great to have something to work towards, to motivate you and to be disciplined. Saying it out loud really helps.
John – That’s what I love about setting yourself up for success. You set your goal. It doesn’t need to be grandiose. Often it’s good to set small goals, achieve those, prove to yourself that you can achieve them, get that feeling of success, then set your next goal and succeed there. Next thing you know one success is building off the other and you start to really believe in yourself.
John – After setting smaller goals, then setting harder goals and actually accomplishing them, I like being able to say, “that was a hard thing to do, but I did it”. What sets me up and builds my confidence is that now when I’m in a rough situation and it feels hard and I feel like I can’t keep going. There’s that little voice in my head that says “you can’t do this.” Now I know there’s another little voice in my head that says “you can do this.” Just keep trying. Just keep moving forward. You can make this happen. I won’t be as easily defeated by that little voice in my head that says “you can’t do this.”
Hillary – Being confident to me isn’t thinking “look what I can do” in a bragging way. If I’m in a tough situation, I say to myself, “look what you can do. You’ve done tough exercise. You can push through anything. You can also do this”, no matter the circumstances.
Hillary – Exercise is a natural mood booster. It’s an anti-depressant. There are so many benefits to movement. It doesn’t need to be an intense workout. I could be that, but it could be going for a walk.
Bulletin Board Quote brought to you by John: In your face people! Look at me!!
