Guest: Lynne MacDonald

Start times and Segments:

[0:00:35] What’s On Your Mind: Guest host Ciara joins Isabelle. They’re both university students. They talk about how the initially wished challenges would go away, but now see challenges as helping them grow. Challenges help their future.

[0:11:34] Expanding Minds Interview: [Economic Wellness] We interview real estate agent Lynne MacDonald. We ask her what she tells first time home buyers, and how she helps them. The current environment often includes bidding wars. The process takes more time and energy than many people expect, with stress and challenges along the way. When it happens, getting that first house is a wonderful experience.

[0:28:09] Adventures of the Starving Artist: It was a Saturday night and Cameron had lots of projects on the go. He took time out to relax and chat with a friend on Discord. His friend plays the vibraphone and he shared a new musical piece.

[0:32:06] Move That Body: Julie tells Elise about Forest Bathing and its benefits. It’s about walking through an being present in nature.

[0:36:58] Running Popup: John’s approach to wellness and balance takes hard work. He’d rather have something that’s hard to do, but doable, than either no possibility at all or sitting around waiting for wellness to come along as a lucky break.

[0:39:40] Flipside of the Coin: We’re both feeling like we’re in a rat race during a very busy time. It’s work, work, work, sleep, wake up and do it all again.

Quotes and Take-Aways:

Ciara – I used to become very scared by challenges. I tended to freeze or shut down. When I faced a challenge I wanted it to go away. I didn’t think anything good comes out of them. Different challenges present themselves on my co-op term and navigating the work environment. I’ve learned to not run away from challenges the way I used to. The biggest thing is that I now see a challenge and I think this is really going to help my future. If I didn’t experience that challenge, I wouldn’t have been able to navigate that difficult, windy road.

Isabelle – I’ve learned that rejection is redirection in a sense. It places you at the right place at the right time. For the co-op position I have right now, I got rejected in Cycle 1, but I got this amazing position that I am so happy to have in Cycle 2, and that wouldn’t have happened without rejection.

Isabelle – I hold myself to unattainable standards. I think it stems from wanting the best for myself and only wanting success in my life, whereas overcoming challenges determines your character and helps you develop the hard and soft skills that help you throughout your career.

Ciara – When I think of challenges and achievements in my life, I feel the lows more than the highs. One thing with personal growth that I want to get to is allowing those highs to be weighted more than the lows.

Isabelle – My whole philosophy on life is that life is all about perspective, and how you choose to see things and experience things.

Lynne – Even if clients walk into a house and say ,“we hate this house”, I suggest we use it as an opportunity for education. They may see what a broken window seal looks like, or a roof that need to be replaced, or water in the basement, or whatever. We learn about different styles of houses and about different locations. I feel that the more educated a buyer is, then the easier my job is.

Lynne – Frustration comes from the unknown. That’s where fear comes in.

Lynne – Many buyers don’t expect how demanding it is physically and mentally. It’s been a seller’s market for the past 5-6 years. They could be in for a long haul. They need to be ready to jump at a house and make themselves available to go see it. Things are happening very quickly.

Lynne – It’s easy to say, “don’t get emotionally attached”, but everybody does. Then if they lose in a multiple offer situation it can be very upsetting and very draining.

Lynne – Most buyers who end up finding a house will say, “We were so disappointed when we lost on those other houses, but we’re so glad we did, because this is the house that we are meant to be in.” It’s the part of my job I love.

Bulletin Board Quote brought to you by Julie: An eco antidote to tech boom burnout.
