Guest: Sammy Demaren

Start Times and Segments:

[0:00:35] What’s On Your Mind: We talk about checking back in with the wellness check-in concept. It’s a well-known phenomenon – you’re on a roll with physical health, then fall off working out or eating right, etc. It’s hard to get back into it. It helps to check-in regularly and ask yourself whether you’re taking care of your physical health. The same holds true for all areas of wellness.

[0:10:37] Expanding Minds Interview: [Balance] Sammy Damaren drops by with an update. Sammy is a founding co-host for our podcast. She took a break from the podcast earlier this year as her way of working towards balance, because she started new businesses, was working multiple jobs as the Office/ Marketing & Events Manager at Flux Realty, the Owner & Creative Director at West Haus Studio and teaching dance at Underdog Dance Corp. She has many balls in the air. It’s great to hear from her. She tells us about finding balance with a busy life.

[0:29:44] Adventures of the Starving Artist: Choir has been a part of Cameron’s life since he was young. His brother joined a choir in Ottawa. Cameron went to a rehearsal that was open to the public. It felt different to be an audience member instead of performing. The performance includes playing wine glasses filled with different levels of water. The sound was lush and wonderful.

[0:34:57] Move That Body: A CBC article about “7 ways to make your walks more intense and more interesting”, by Janet Ho (Oct. 11, 2022): speed up, mix in intervals, go uphill, gamify your routine, give race walking a go and focus on nasal breathing.

[0:40:56] Running Popup: Taking time over a coffee to enjoy seeing animal life in his own back yard, with squirrels enjoying crabapples from a tree they planted and water from a bowl they put out.

[0:43:53] Flipside of the Coin: Sheila and John have very difference concepts of what chillin’ out feels like.

Quotes and Take-Aways:

John – You need to check in on physical health. It’s just so easy to find other things that take your time. Next thing you know you’re thinking, “I don’t have time to go to the gym. I don’t have time to work out.”

John – You need to keep checking in. You need to make a mental effort, whether you put it on your calendar or whether you’re one of those people who can just do it mentally. You need to check in on a regular basis and ask yourself, “Am I keeping up my physical health? Am I getting enough sleep? Am I eating in moderation? Am I exercising? etc.”

Sheila – I was thinking about all eight categories of wellness and how it’s not just physical that we should be checking in on. We should be checking in on all of our areas of wellness and do a wellness check-in, not just a physical health check-in.

Sammy – I enjoy teaching adult dance at Underdog Dance Corp. The students are adults who hadn’t danced before, or not for a long time. They get to try new things. It’s a judgment free zone. It’s a very inclusive space. We’re here to just move our bodies and dance. Everyone cheers everyone on. It’s fun to see people gain that confidence.

Sammy – It took me a while to get back to the gym with all this going on. I was trying to balance all this stuff, and sort my life out and not get overstressed. If I push myself too hard I tend to get sick. It feels like I’m allergic to stress. Now I’ve started going back to the gym regularly. I’m really enjoying it.

Sammy – For the most part I’m making time for the things I feel that I need. For example on the social side, I make time for friends who mean a lot for me and fill my cup. I always feel more energized and inspired after spending time with them.

John – I remember a quote I saw recently. I’m twisting it a little bit. It said, “It’s very difficult to find happiness and balance within yourself, but you can’t find it anywhere else”. If you really want to find that balance then you need to work on it, and it’s hard work.

Bulletin Board Quote brought to you by Sheila: Your idea of chill would probably kill me

Guest Information: We know Sammy Damaren as a founding co-host of our show. Without her, we wouldn’t be here. She’s busy at work these days, as the Office/ Marketing & Events Manager at Flux Realty, the Owner & “Creative Director” at West Haus Studio and teaching dance at Underdog Dance Corp. Growing up in the vibrant Arts Community in the KW Region, she loves collaborating with fellow artists and has had a deep appreciation for the arts and the power of creative expression. Sammy’s West Haus Studio business is the fulfillment of that passion, enabling her to team up with local artists and channel creativity into diverse projects. It could be organizing events, crafting imaginative installations, or embarking on exciting content experiments. She celebrates and promotes the significance of the arts, all while providing a safe and fun space where everyone can freely express themselves.
