E001 Beth Beattie Living With Bipolar Disorder

Participants: John Webster, Sammy Damaren, Cameron Earnshaw and Sheila Webster
Guest: Beth Beattie

Summary: It’s the debut episode. Our podcast grew from concepts in John’s book, Accidentally Well. He’s developing a framework to seek balance and fulfillment, taking into account eight categories of wellness: Physical, Mental, Economic, Social, Artistic, Environmental, Spiritual and Intellectual. If he ignores some areas, even if he’s thriving in others, it affects his overall well-being. He needs to act – to take active steps – to foster wellness in the different areas. Most interviews relate to one or more the eight facets of wellness that we’re exploring.

Quotes and Take-Aways:

Sammy – The saying “good vibes only” leaves no space to be sad or upset or angry, but you need to let people feel what they feel.

Beth – The problem was the stigma associated with being bipolar. The stereotype was an is that we are inherently unstable and unreliable, and I didn’t want to be seen in those terms. So, I kept my illness quiet for 14 years.

Beth – When we are trying to help someone who seems to be going through something, it’s important to reach out and ask them what they need rather than us assuming what they need.

Cameron – “Be less like sponge. Be more like duck”. Let it roll off your back. Keep paddling and stay afloat.

John – I thought that balance would come to me somehow, that it would arrive. Maybe some magical person would tap me on the shoulder and welcome me to the club. Then I thought, “Hey, what if there’s something I can actually do about it?

Bulletin Board quote brought to you by Cameron: Where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs.
