Let’s Be Well Together Podcast - Episode 35
Date: September 27, 2022
Participants: John Webster, Sammy Damaren, Cameron Earnshaw and Sheila Webster
Guest: Adrian DeCoo (Expanding Minds) and Khiam Nong (Move That Body)
Start times and Segment Segments:
[0:00:44] What’s On Your Mind: It’s a facets activities day. We talk about activities that foster spiritual wellness. We connect having a sense of right and wrong, with values that guide, as part of being spiritual.
[0:12:30] Expanding Minds Interview: [Social Wellness] Adrian DeCoo has been part of and witnessed amazing accomplishments of people working together, particularly through Rotary International initiatives. Sometimes we imagine a job is too big, so why even try? It’s amazing that a dream goal of one person, which at first blush might seem unattainable, comes to fruition when a community works together to achieve it.
[0:29:58] Adventures of the Starving Artist: Cameron faced curveballs left and right during a performance on busy weekend. Everything broke, but he rolled with it, the show went on as they say, and he completed the performances without a hitch.
[0:33:32] Move That Body: Khiam Nong includes pilates as part of a healthy lifestyle. It’s amazing for the core. She loves the way it makes her feel.
[0:39:28] Running Popup: For most of his life John took a first road, one that gave him a false sense of security. Now he sees another way forward. It’s a smoother road that provides more protection through bad weather.
[0:42:19] Flipside of the Coin: We talk more about dangers of extreme skepticism. We would never get anything done if we require 100% proof of everything before we act. Today we use the context of politics as an example.
Quotes and Take-Aways:
John – I connect having a sense of right and wrong, with values that guide, as being something that is spiritual. It helps me on a spiritual level.
John – Part of social wellness to me is community and the support network and working together.
Adrian – I’ve always understood that team, or group performance is driven by individual pursuit of excellence. What I mean by that is the individual desire to succeed.
Adrian – We give our gift of time to where we think it’s most interesting and most enjoyable.
John – One of the areas that I lament is environment – whether it can be changed and whether we have time. That’s another space where hopefully people working together, rather than giving up at the start and throwing our hands up, we’ve got to find a way to solve this environmental problem, because things are not going too well. Whether we are beyond the point of no return is a big question in my mind.
Adrian – I’ve come up with three components to what legacy means. The first legacy we all leave behind is one of relationships. The second component is one of intellectual or professional or craft pursuit, and that too lives beyond us. I think the third component of legacy is service. It’s service to others. It’s what we give back to the community and to the world.
John – My own personal experience is that giving back and helping people are some of the most rewarding parts of my life.
John – Our own world breaks down if we’re so skeptical that we need 100% proof of everything before we act. We’d never get anything done.
Bulletin Board Quote brought to you by John: A lot of people would say, “You’re an idiot John”.
