Let’s Be Well Together Podcast - Episode 84
Date: September 5, 2023

Participants: Elise Seifert, Sheila Webster and John Webster
Guest: Mike Kienapple

Start times and Segments:

[0:00:35] What’s On Your Mind: Talking about an article on BBC, “Why friendship make us healthier”, by Christine Ro (March 30, 2023). Elise and Sheila are both extroverts. They’re energized by being with friends. There are many healthy benefits of friendship.

[0:12:08] Expanding Minds Interview: [Physical Wellness] We interview Mike Kienapple, who got into CrossFit when he turned 50. He can do exercises and movements that he never imagined were even possible at his age. He trains hard during the year to prepare for the CrossFit Open, which happens annually. Mike tells us how the competition works and how he did this year. He also tells us about another annual event called Murph.

[0:29:23] Adventures of the Retired Artist: Sheila has been teaching dance for many years. She believes extra-curricular activities are very important to kids, especially in the arts. She’s children gain so much. They grow from successes and from things that go wrong.

[0:34:17] Move That Body: A tough lesson to hear in the article, “Obesity changes the brain, with ‘no sign of reversibility,’ expert says”, by Sandee LaMotte, CNN (June 12, 2023). A study showed that being obese affects the brain. They don’t get the message that they are full, nor the pleasurable dopamine boost that people who are not obese feel. To make it worse, it’s not reversible. The same reactions happen even after a person loses weight. Although it’s tough news, knowing it might help.

[0:40:51] Running Popup: John thinks about a Pablo Picasso quote, “Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working.” So true.

[0:42:39] Flipside of the Coin: Trust is so important in relationships, and by the way don’t lie to an overthinker. It doesn’t end well.

Quotes and Take-Aways:

Elise – It’s work. You need to work to keep friendships going, which can be really tricky.

Mike – The CrossFit open is a worldwide fitness competition. It’s open to any skill level and age. It happens starting in February every year.

Mike – Training for the CrossFit Open is a year-round process. I take a few months off after the event, then start slowly back. By September I’m in full-on training until the competition, for a good six months.

Mike – We have another annual event called Murph. It’s a mile run, followed by 100 pull‑ups, 200 push‑ups, 300 air squats, then run another mile.

Mike – I can do things I never thought were even possible at my age.

Mike – Mobility has a lot to do with the amount of weight you can move. Core strength plays a big role in CrossFit exercises.

Bulletin Board Quote brought to you by Sheila: We didn’t need to make friends. We woke up with friends.

Guest Information: Mike Kienapple is a business owner and an avid outdoor enthusiast. He enjoys camping, canoe trips, exploring and his gym life at CrossFit Kitchener. Mike has lived the region of Waterloo his entire life. He has two adult children – his daughter Emily and his son Sean.
